Southern Charm Wedding at the La Brea Tar Pits

A sunset ceremony on the terrace and cocktails overlooking the a lush atrium, who wouldn’t find the La Brea Tar Pits the perfect place for a wedding?

AprilSmithPhotography_23

A beautiful fall day provided set the scene for Becca and Ben’s wedding at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits. And, as always, local street musician Charlie Cox was at his usual post serenading the guys with his catalogue of music!

Inside the museum the open air atrium was a great place for the couple to have a first look and make use of the tropical setting for some amazing photos!

Once tended by George C Page himself, the atrium is the center of the Page Museum.  This popular exhibit is a quiet spot to stop, take a breather and enjoy the nature.

AprilSmithPhotography_03

Becca and Ben chose to have their ceremony on the Page Museum Terrace overlooking the atrium and has sweeping views of the La Brea Tar Pits, Hancock Park and the Hollywood Hills. Their 120 guests easily fit in the space and everyone had a great view!

The arbor  full of local flowers as well as flowers from Ben’s native Australia provided a stunning backdrop for the couple during the ceremony.

After cocktails on the terrace, guests moved into the Page Museum for dinner with an ice age theme.

Each table was labeled with an ice age mammal and actual fossils stood guard over the terrariums and tiny ice age mammal figurines.

After dinner everyone passed under the tusks of the Columbian Mammoth on their way to the dance floor!

A Toast to Southern California at the Page Museum!

On Thursday May 12, we were happy to partner with Get Married and Wish Wonder Dream Wedding Coordination at the George C. Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits! This event brought together wedding professionals from all over Southern California to sip, taste and experience some of the best wedding vendors in Southern California!

The Main Gallery of the museum was strewn with cocktail tables on the west side where guests were served drinks underneath a Columbian Mammoth! The east side of the museum had delicious finger foods from Truly Yours Catering.

DJFX Entertainment set up their music and a dance area in the timeline section of the museum, a popular place for the dance floor!

Please enjoy these photos from inside the main gallery:

We also got this opportunity to show off the upper terrace of the museum. The terrace is open-aired and looks down in the museum’s atrium where cocktails were being served.

While the terrace is exceptionally beautiful in daylight…

…nighttime brought out a whole new attitude!

And who could forget the goodies?

Congratulations Kevin and Elizabeth!

On 10.10.10 we had not one, but TWO weddings! Both the Natural History Museum and the George C Page museum at the La Brea Tar Pits were home to two very special weddings!

Kevin and Elizabeth exchanged vows on the upper terrace of the Page Museum. The terrace is an open air level one flight up from the main museum and overlooks the Grand Circle in Hancock Park and the atrium inside the museum. In addition, the terrace offers sweeping views of the Hollywood Hills and Wilshire Boulevard.

The party then moved indoors where guests ate, drank and danced amongst the ice age mammals including mammoths, dire wolf skulls, giant sloths and saber-tooth cats.

Guests were served wine, beer, soft drinks and the couple’s signature vodka drink “Prehistoric Punch.”

When renting the Page Museum for an after-hours event, the entire floor of the museum becomes your event space. We also keep the center atrium open for viewing.

As the museum is fully carpeted, we do recommend renting a dance floor! For this wedding, they decided to hold the dancing over by the timeline in the southeast corner of the museum.

Kevin and Elizabeth opted to keep the audio animatronics mammoth on for the reception, and guests were treated to his “responses” all during the best man’s speech. If you prefer, we will be happy to silence him or let him roar during your event.

All the above photos are courtesy of Dan Cole. You can see more of his amazing work at www.gritbox.com.

AAM 2010

This year Los Angeles was home to the American Association of Museums Annual Meeting & Museum Expo. In conjunction with the California Science Center and the California African-American Museum, the Natural History Museum was part of the Exposition Block Party on May 24.

On May 26 we were at the George C. Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits for An Evening of Art, Culture and Mammoths, along with the Craft Art and Folk Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Guests were dropped off by bus once again and were invited to stroll through Hancock Park as they enjoyed three of Wilshire Boulevard’s most interesting museums!

AAM attendees stopped by the Page Museum to check out our Ice Age fossils while munching on some delectable treats from About Thyme Catering (www.aboutthymela.com/) and enjoying the music provided by DJ Tim Martinez (www.goodsounddj.com).

Our education staff was on hand to answer questions about our collections and programs and the staff of our fishbowl lab worked diligently at excavating “Zed” the Columbian mammoth to the delight of the guests.

Our open air atrium stayed open for the evening as well. With the lush foliage, koi pond and dozens of wandering turtles, this makes for a relaxing and serene respite from the hustle and bustle of nearby Wilshire Boulevard!

The Page Museum has a seating capacity of 250 guests and a standing capacity of 500. The impressive collection of fossils found on site in the Tar Pits serve as a backdrop to one of the most unique events that your guests will most likely have the pleasure of attending!
