Congratulations Earth and April!

On Sunday September 26, Earth and April held the first wedding reception in the newly restored Rotunda!

The ceremony was held in the grand foyer and guests sipped on mint iced tea and hibiscus lemonade as they took their seats around the dueling dinos. The wedding party entered through the African Mammal Hall directly towards the guests for a very dramatic entrance.

After the ceremony, everyone headed over to the Rotunda to celebrate the occasion! Instead of a traditional sit down dinner, the couple opted for heavy appetizers both passed and  buffet style. White leather couches and ottomans were spread out in between the marble columns giving guests a chance to sit and chat. In addition, extra seated and standing cocktail tables were spread throughout the room, including some placed on the mezzanine level. The happy couple also took full advantage of our beautiful portico on the east entrance! As you can see it makes a beautiful backdrop for photos, and there is room on the stairs to fit the whole family!

All of the amazing photos you see here were shot by Jen O’Sullivan and her team. To see more of her work, please visit http://jenosullivan.com/.

In addition, the mouth-watering food was prepared and served by John Kinderman and his team at About Thyme Catering (www.aboutthymela.com), the gorgeous lounge furniture and lines were from Town and Country Rentals (http://townandcountryeventrentals.com/), the flowers were from The Hidden Garden (http://www.hiddengardenflowers.com/), the entertainment was provided by Barry Lamster (www.barrylamster.com) and Arielle Haze, the ”LA Wedding Woman” (www.laweddingwoman.com) officiated the service. The mouth-watering cake was constructed by Kimberly Bailey from the Butter End Cakery (http://thebutterendcakery.com/) and will be featured on an upcoming episode of TLC’ Fabulous Cakes. We will post the air date as soon as we know it!

So a big thank you to April, Earth and all their friends and family who came out to celebrate! It was an honor to be a part of your wedding and we wish you health and happiness and always remember,

“There’s no point in being grown up if you can’t be childish sometimes.” ;-)

The Girls are Back!

Our newly restored Haaga Family Rotunda is now open to the public!

The first floor of the Haaga Family Rotunda is displaying a new exhibit titled, “What on Earth?”  This fun and engaging installation offers Museum visitors close-up views of the objects on display, mounted and beautifully lit. A single question is posed alongside each object. Answers, and more questions, await as you walk around to the opposite side of each display case. (Taken from www.nhm.org) The second floor mezzanine runs the circumference of the room and is currently home to the exhibit “Life Through the Ages: Revisiting the Paintings of Charles R. Knight.”

This room features a domed ceiling with a magnificent stained glass window. In the center of the room stands the very first piece of public art funded by Los Angeles County, a Beaux Arts statue entitled “Three Muses,” which represents the disciplines of Art, History and Science.

Whether you are looking to hold an intimate wedding ceremony, a cocktail reception or a formal dinner, this room will not disappoint! It has a seated capacity of 120 and a standing capacity of 250 guests.

The first 10 people to book the Rotunda will receive a 25% off the list price. Hurry as spaces are filling up quickly!

For more information on holding an event in the Rotunda or any of our other rooms, please visit http://www.nhm.org/site/about-our-museums/event-rentals-filming or call the Special Events Information Line at 213-763-3221.

For a Whale of a Good Time… Call Us!

We are now accepting reservations for events in the new Fin Whale Passage here at NHM! This room is washed in gentle blue light that makes you feel as though you are swimming right along with this beautiful creature! Suspended from the ceiling, the fin whale has become an institution at NHM, having been displayed from 1944 until 2006 when it was taken down for construction work at the museum.

This will be the main thoroughfare into the Rotunda when it opens in this July. The room is accessible from both the Grand Foyer and North American Mammal Hall.

Capacity for the fin whale passage is 410 standing and 200 seated. If you would like more information about renting the Fin Whale Passage or any of our galleries for you event, please call 213-763-3221 or email us at specialevents@nhm.org. You can also check out our website at http://www.nhm.org/site/about-our-museums/event-rentals-filming.

All of the above photos were taken by Shannon Cottrell for LA Weekly. If you would like to look at more photos of the room or to see a time-lapsed video of the whale being mounted, please go to http://laist.com/2010/03/02/nhm_huge_fin_whale.php?gallery0Pic=2#gallery.
